From my original Amazon review:
I have always been neutral on standard genmaicha, but decided to try this matcha-infused version. It is a completely different experience that adds a significant layer of complexity to the traditional profile.
Before brewing, the dry mix has a strong, roasted aroma with a hint of sweetness. Once steeped, this scent becomes more potent and the fine matcha powder dissolves into the water to create a vibrant, opaque green liquor.
The taste unfolds in distinct stages. The first sip delivers the familiar toasty and nutty notes of the roasted brown rice. Immediately after, the matcha introduces a rich umami character with a full body and a distinctly smooth, creamy texture that made me go "hmm?". The experience concludes with a clean, slightly vegetal sweetness from the sencha base in the aftertaste.
The flavour profile is complex and took me a few cups to fully appreciate, so it may not be for everyone. However, for £10 per 100g, the value is exceptional, especially considering the matcha is from Uji. While the taste alone is a solid 4 stars for me, the unique experience and outstanding price-to-performance ratio make this an easy 5-star overall.
